Whether it was country to country, city to city or just room to room, some of these boxes, often being heavy, needed to be carried easily and safely during travel. Taking influence from the campaign furniture of the time, makers would fit brass side or top handles to these boxes. So as not to ruin the profile of the box, recessed or flush mounted handles were used. The late Georgian and William IV style of handle tended to be quite formal in appearance, but as Victorian tastes evolved, handle design often became more stylised. In some cases, the handles even became the focus of the exterior, with their extravagant form or engraved finishing.
